The Unnoticed Interdependence of Americans

There is a belief among many of the wealthiest Americans that their wealth was “self made” that they made it on their own through their smarts, hard work, and perseverance. But is this really true? Or more succinctly, is this entirely true?

Although it is obvious that in order to succeed in business, you must have a good idea, you must work hard at developing it; and you must have the resolve to stay with the idea – when the going gets tough, they are other factors that play roles in your success.

You could not have own this business in a totalitarian country.

If you were a women living in some Muslim countries chances are you would have been denied the education that would have enabled you to run a business. And if you were a man living in certain sections of the world, like Africa, your dreams of owning your own business and making riches would have ended at the age of 11 – 13 at which time, an authority figure would have handed you a rifle and forced you to join one of the warring factions in your country.

But even if you were born and lived in more benevolent countries, the type of success you’re experiencing in the United States of America would have been highly unlikely: poverty, disease, lack of educational opportunities, lack of resources, lack of funding, lack of network, lack of support systems . . . are just a few of the obstacles you would have faced.

Fact of the matter is “We enjoy privileged lives in the world’s most privileged society because the sons and daughters (many under the age of 21) of middle class and working class Americans decided that our way of life with its wonder privileges is worth preserving. They continue to volunteer to fight – and die – in order to preserve it." So the next time, Mr. and Mrs. Self-Made Persons, you feel the urge to tell the middle class and the poor about “the unfairness of the tax burden they are trying to get you to pay on a business that you built as a self-made man/woman', please visit a national cemetery or view the pictures of the soldiers, sailor, air men, coast guards, and marines that were killed in Iraq and Afghanistan; or better yet, visit their parents!

If possible, take a member of the Tea Party with you – they don’t get it!!! Whether they can is doubtful, but we can and should try.
