Today is Flag Day, and Wisconsin Republican Leaders are making a Mockery of it!

Today is a special day. It is June 14, 2011. It is the official Flag Day in the United States. All military installations throughout the United States and the world will fly our largest flag or the Garrison Flag. Its dimensions are 38 feet fly (length) by 20 feet hoist (wide). It’s most impressive in appearance. In its upper left corner beams the stars, bigger than you have ever seen them, one for each state in the union, in harmony with the blue heavenly background that seems to reach out and extends itself to the blue sky around the flag. The stripes do not extend or complement anything anywhere in the universe. They simply evoke memories of blood (red stripes) in harmony with valor (white stripes) of the Thirteen Colonies and the Revolutionary War. They simply bring to mind the great leaderships and visions of The Founding Fathers. They bring to mind remembrances of all the wars and conflicts this flag has seen. They create thoughts about the many times this flag was present when important supreme court decisions were determined, when key legislations became law, and when brave men led civil actions to protect the poorest, uneducated, and most vulnerable among us.

This big beautiful and proud garrison flag represents how far we’ve come and the great strides we’ve made. It represents this wonderful country of which we should be proud, particularly on this day ― Flag Day.

Yet, here I sit in Wisconsin, on June 14, 2011. Governor Scott Walker and the republicans are voting to create some of the most uncivil, undemocratic, unfair, inhumane, and immoral policies ever created since the days of Jim Crow laws in the first half of the 20th century. It is as if they are spitting on the flag, burning the flag, and making a mockery of the equality, fairness, respect, courage, truthfulness, and God-fearing moral and religious values and principles it represents. It is as if they are making fun of every soldier, sailor, air man, marine, and coast guard who gave their lives protecting and defending the important principles that are the bedrock of our society.

This Flag Day is the saddest Flag Day and the worst Flag Day that I have experienced. I imagine that it is the same for many others. And we have the governor of Wisconsin to thank for it― Thanks Scott Walker, for turning a beautiful national dream into a greedy-money-hungry nightmare.

God, help us!
